[5] Muirを調べる資料

John Muirの研究資料は、Univ. of the Pacificが作成したJohn Muir Paper(JMP)と呼ばれるマイクロフィルム（リール）が基本となりますが、限られた図書館でしか閲覧できず、我々一般にはアクセスしにくいものです。以下では、比較的購入・閲覧が可能な書籍についてまとめました。[5.1]はMuirもしくは関連する人の手紙、日記、本などをです。[5.2]はMuirに関して書かれた研究・解説書です。一冊でMuirのすべてをカバーする本はありません。[5.3]はMuirの生涯についてまとめた入門書です。これらの本は、資料の引用先がはっきりしておらず、読む際には注意が必要です。[5.4]は、Muir本人がメインではありませんが、有用な解説を含んだ研究書です。意外にも役立つのは、インターネット上で読めるMuir本人の著作です。本、手紙、主要な雑誌投稿記事のかなりのものが閲覧できます。[5.5][5.6]を参考にしてください。

[5.1]Muirの日記、手紙、本、新聞投稿記事

ヨセミテ、シエラネバダに関するMuirの代表的著書といえば、”The Mountains of California”（1894年）、”Our National Parks”（1901年)、”My First Summer in The Sierra”(1911年)、”Yosemite”(1912年)です。これらの本は、他人に読ませるためにかかれたもので、今ひとつMuirの個性が伝わってきません。一方Muirの没後編纂された日記（Wolfe編纂）、手紙（Bade編纂）はMuirの実生活を深く知ることのできる、興味深い資料です。

「South of Yosemite – Selected Writing of John Muir」
Frederic R. Gunsky編集（初版1968,再版 1988年)
Muirの文献を集めた本で、それらにわずかですが解説が加えられています。収められている資料のほとんどは、現在ネット上で読めます。それ以外のいくつかの貴重な収められています（たとえば「God’s First Temple」）。

「John Muir Summering in the Sierra」
Robert Engberg編(1984年)
1874年と1975年の間に、Muirが投稿した新聞記事を集めている。北カリフォルニア、南シエラ方面旅行時のことを知る貴重な資料集。

「John Muir – To Yosemite and Beyond: Writings from the Years 1863 to 1875」
Robert Engberg and Donald Wesling編集（1980年）
タイトルの示すように、1863から1875年の間の、Muirの文献を集めた本です。BadeやWolfe、Overland Monthlyの資料とオーバーラップするものがかなりありますが、それらに無い貴重な資料が入っています（たとえば1868年6月6日、7月11日の日記。「My First Summer in the Sierra」と比べるとその書き方の違いがわかります）。

Muirの著作はほとんどオンラインで読めますが、本の便利さを求めるならば、以下の二冊がお買い得です。

「John Muir; The Eight Wilderness-Discovery Books」
Muirの主要作品8本の合本で、総1000ページ：The Sroty of My Boyhood and Youth, A Thousand Mile Walk to the Gulf, My First Summer in the Sierra, The Mountains of California, Our National Park, The Yosemite, Travels in Alaska, Steep Trails

「John Muir: His Life and Letters and Other Writings」
Badeの編纂したThe Life and Letters of John Muirをはじめ、The Cruse of the Corwin, Studies in the Sierra, Stickeen,The Discovery of Glacier Bay, Essays from Picturesque Californiaなどが収められています。約900ページ。

「Remembered Yesterdays」
Robert Underwood Johnson著（1923年）
出版社：Kessinger Publishing
ヨセミテ国立公園の設立運動や、Ｈetch Ｈetchy渓谷のダム化反対運動などに関わった、Century誌の編集者Robert Underwood Johnsonは、1923年に回顧録”Remembered Yesterdays”を出版しました。それには、1889年にSan Franciscoのホテルで初めてＭuirに会ったとき、共にYosemiteに出向き、Tuolumne MeadowsのSoda Springsで、国立公園設立の運動をする提案をしたこと、1890年に連邦議会での公園設立運動に関わった政治家たちのこと、その後アメリカに広まった森林保護の流れやHetch Hetchy問題に絡む、Roosevelt大統領やPinchot（Forest Service初代長官）との書簡のやり取り、Roosevelt本人から聞いたMuirとのヨセミテ旅行のことなどが書かれています。600ページとかなり厚い本ですが、上記に関連した部分は50ページ程度しかなく、あまりお買い得感はありませんが、Muirの個性や当時のワシントンの内情がうかがえる、貴重なMuir関連資料。

「Breaking New Ground」
Gifford Pinchot著（1947年）
森林局長官Gifford Pinchotの書いた自伝。Forest Commissionのメンバーとして、Muirと旅行したときのことがわずかだが触れられている。Hetchy-Hetchyに関しては全く書かれていない。

Ｍｕｉｒ像はすでにＢａｄｅやＷｏｌｆｅの本によって描かれているので、その二番煎じではなく、当時の時代背景などとあわせ、Ｍｕｉｒの新しい解釈をしたと書いています。Wolfe、Ｂａｄｅを読んだ後に読むと、かなり味わえます。最初の一冊としてはあまりお勧めできません。参考資料への解説が詳しく、それを読むだけでも楽しめます。

「The American Conservation Movement: John Muir and His Lagacy」
Stephen Fox著（1981年）

全400ページ強の本です。そのうち150ページほど（1−4章）が、Muir本人について書かれています（特に、Muirがヨセミテを去って、自然保護運動を徐々に始めて行くところ）。本の後半は、Muir没後の自然保護の流れについて書かれています。すべての引用文にはその出展が書かれています。Steven J. Holemsはこの本について”fo Muir’s influence and legacy within the conservation movement, to Stephen Fox”と書いています（2003年版、Wolfeの本の序文の中で）。面白いことに、MuirとHutchings婦人との関係で、プラトニックを越える何かがあっただろうと書いています（MuirとElvira H.の関係については、いろいろ本で触れられています）。

Muirがヨセミテに初めて訪れた1868年から、ヨセミテと関ったさまざまな旅行、探検、出会いなどのハイライトを、短いながらもわかりやすく、かなり正確にまとめています。

「Son of The Wilderness: The Life of John Muir」
Linnie Marsh Wolfe（1945年初版、2003年再版）

Muirの一生を300ページ強にまとめています。1945年に初版が発行されたこの本は、ピューリッツアー賞を受賞しており、かなり引き込まれるように読んでしまう本です。しかしその反面、Steven J. Holmesによる寄せ書きでも指摘されているように、資料引用の不備、不正確もしくは想像に拠る描写などが所々に見られ、読む際にはかなり注意が必要です。ともあれ、Muirの一生をとりあえず知るという意味では、ポピュラーな一冊。

「John Muir; Apostle of Nature」
Thurman Wilkins著（1995年）

「Son of the Wilderness」(Wolfe)形式のMuir伝記。その後の研究や、資料も参考にして書かれているので、Wolfe本よりは客観的で広範囲な内容。特に探検・地学関連に詳しい。使った資料の説明は最後にあるものの、各引用文のソースが書かれていないのは残念。ところどころWolfeの本を不用意に引用しているのに注意。

「John Muir Nature’s Visionary」
Gretel Ehrlich著（2000年）

National Geographicから出版された、Muirの伝記本。貴重なMuirのスケッチや日記の写真が、数々のすばらしい風景写真と共に掲載されています（写真は、Galen Rowellを含めいろいろな写真家のものを使用しています）。文量は意外と少ない。間違いが多いので注意（例えば「Range of Light」の章で、Mr.Delaneyがまったく登場せず、Billyと混同している。,第二キャンプをヨセミテ渓谷と勘違いしているような記述がされている）。コーヒーテーブルブックといった感じの本です。

「History of the Sierra Nevada」

Sierra Nevada全般の登山、探検の歴史を書いた本です。”John Muir and the Range of Light”という章で、Muirの登山記録が簡単にまとめています。絵がいくつか入って18ページと短いですが、山登りに（1869−1875）関しては、おそらく一番信頼できる文献です。FarquharはSierra Clubの会長でもありました。

「Sunset Limited
The Southern Pacific Railroad and the Development of the American West, 1850-1930」
Richard J. Orsi 著（2005年）
California State University HaywardのRichard Orsi教授著の”Sunset Limited”が先日発刊されました。この本は当時、政治経済に多大な影響力を誇ったSouthern Pacific鉄道会社に関する研究をまとめた本です。資料も含め600ページとかなりボリュームのある本です。特に、ヨセミテがらみで興味を惹かれるのはその最終章”Conservation”です。Orsi氏の研究によると、1890年のヨセミテ国立公園設立の最大の貢献者は、通説になっているJohn MuirやRobert Underwood Johnsonの運動ではなく、並行して独立に行われていたSouthern Pacificと関わりのあったVandever議員やロビィストのZumwaltによる運動にあるとしています。そこには鉄道会社の自然保護(Wilderness Preservation、Conservationではない)への強い関心がありました。最近の専門書はこの説を、おおむね支持しているようです。

“The Battle Over Hetch Hetchy”
Robert W. Righter著（2005年）,

Hetch-Hetchyダム問題に関する専門書です。ダムに没する前のHetch-Hetchy Valleyの話(当然Muirがでてきます)、サンフランシスコの水問題、賛成派と反対派の論争、そして連邦議会での論議、建設の話などが、中立の立場で非常に詳しく書かれています。意外なことに、当時のダム化反対主派(Sierra Club)は、Hetch-Hetchy Valleyにホテルやレストラン等を作り、さらにはTuolumne Meadowsへと続く道路建設(Colby Brief)を考えていたそうです。貴重な数々の写真とともに、1世紀近く前の興味深い環境論争が伺えます。

Wilderness and The American Mind
Roderick Frazier Nash著(初版1967年・4版2001年)
Wildernessを話す上ではバイブル的存在の本。Muirに関しては2章が割かれています。16章構成：Old World Roots of Opinion, A Wilderness Condition, The American Wilderness, Henry David Thoreau: Philosopher, Preseve the Wilderness!, Wilderness Preserved, John Muir: Publicizer, The Wilderness Cult, Hetch Hetchy, Aldo Leopold: Prophet, Decision for Permanence, Toward a Philosophy of Wilderness, Alaska, The Irony of Victory, The International Perspective.

「ZANITA: A Tale of the Yo-semite」
Theresa Yelverton(1872年、1991年再版)
1870年のヨセミテ生活時代のMuirを題材にしたロマンス本。この年、著者のYelverton女史もヨセミテに長期滞在していた。フィクションではあるが、Muirの一面を書いているとされている。オンライン版あり。Yelvertonは、ヨセミテを去るときに遭難騒ぎを起こす。そのときの話はOverland Monthly誌にある。

今月号（California Edition）の特集は、”The National Parks Issue”です。National Parkの将来（”The Future of National Parks”）、ヨセミテのDNCで働く人たち（”Yosemite@$7.38 An Hour”）、NPSの管理（”National Parks Inc.”）などに関する面白い記事が満載です。特に”The Future…”ではYosemite NPの公園長（Superintendent）のMike Tollefsonが登場しています。氏の好きな公園はNorth Cascadesだそうです。

NTTドコモグループ発行の「ドゥ サムシング！」という冊子の2005年秋号の特集「Do Camp! いろんなキャンプのかたち」のなかでのヨセミテ現地取材をお手伝いしました。7月上旬に行われた現地取材にはこのサイトの執筆者のひとり小林真奈美さんが同行。私にしむらが取材全体のアドバイスを行いました。（私も同行できたら6,7,8月と毎月行けたのになあ）
大判のカメラで撮った満水のヨセミテ滝とマーセド川の写真が表紙に使われ、中にはパインズキャンプ場でのキャンパーやJMTバックパッカーの話などが出てきます。
この冊子は「DoCoMoプレミアクラブ」の「プレミアステージ」（ケータイ代をたっぷり払っている方）会員にのみ送付されるもので、残念ながら一般への市販はありません。

ヨセミテ国立公園の設立運動や、Ｈetch Ｈetchy渓谷のダム化反対運動などに関わった、Century誌の編集員Robert Underwood Johnsonは、1923年に回顧録”Remembered Yesterdays”を出版しました。それには、1889年にSan Franciscoのホテルで初めてＭuirに会ったとき、共にYosemiteに出向き、Tuolumne MeadowsのSoda Springsで、国立公園設立の運動をする提案をしたこと、1890年に連邦議会での公園設立運動に関わった政治家たちのこと、その後アメリカに広まった森林保護の流れやHetch Hetchy問題に絡む、Roosevelt大統領やPinchot（Forest Service初代長官）との書簡のやり取り、Roosevelt本人から聞いたMuirとのヨセミテ旅行のことなどが書かれています。600ページとかなり厚い本ですが、上記に関連した部分は50ページ程度しかなく、あまりお買い得感はありませんが、Muirの個性や当時のワシントンの内情がうかがえ、貴重なヨセミテ・Muir関連資料といえるでしょう。

Tuolumne MedowsおよびHigh Sierra付近で1900年代初頭に撮られた写真（主にG. K. Gilbertが撮影）と、同じ撮影場所から80〜90年後に撮った写真の二つを並べ、地勢・植生・人為の影響（車道・ダム・建造物）を比べた写真集です。岩山等に変化は見られませんが、積雪量、植生、そしてメドウなどでの川の流れの違いにはかなり驚かされます。過去の写真と合わせるため、すべてモノクロが使われています。各写真の解説も読んでいて興味深いものがあります。

「Sierra Nevada」[英訳：The Snowy (Mountain) Range]という単語は、1776年、サンフランシスコ湾付近から、その山々を遠望したスペインの伝道師Pedro Fontによって、初めて地図に記されました。1890年、MuirはCentury誌に投稿した記事「The Treasures of The Yosemite」（8月号）の中で、自分にとっては「Sierra Navada」は「Snowy Range」ではなく「The Range of Light」と呼ぶべきだと書きました：Then it seemed to me the Sierra should be called, not the Nevada or Snowy Range, but the Range of Light[1]。 「The Range of Light」がMuirによる造語なのかどうかは定かではありませんが、このフレーズは、その後のMuirの著書「The Mountains of California」（1894年）、および「The Yosemite」（1912年）でも使われています[2][3]。本人によれば、「The Range of Light」という表現は、初めてヨセミテを訪れた1868年に、San Joseの南東Pacheco Pass(CA152号上)からSierra Nevadaを望んだときに思いついたと説明しています[註]。また1911年に出版された「My First Summer in the Sierra」[4]では、「The Range of Light」を使い、結びとしています：Here ends my forever memorable first High Sierra excursion. I have crossed the Range of Light, surely the brightest and best of all the Load has built; and rejoicing in its glory, I gladly, gratefully, hopefully pray I may see it again.　「The Range of Light」はもはや「Sierra Nevada」の代名詞です。ハイシエラで時を過ごすことにより、誰もが「The Range of Light」の表現のもつ奥深さを感じ取れることでしょう。

今年設立100年を迎えたUSDA Forest Service(FS)が作成した、3枚組のドキュメンタリーDVDセット（120分の本編ディスク＋2枚のボーナスディスク付き)。1800年代半ば、開拓と共にアメリカから森林が失われていくときから始まり、1905年、Gifford Pinchotを初代長官とするForest Serviceが設立されるまでの経緯、その後100年にわたる、さまざまな森林管理に関する問題：森林火災、車の普及に伴うレクリエーションの増加、伐採、Wilderness Actに始まる自然保護、そしてエコシステムの理解が進むことにより変わりつつある管理方針など、を時代を追ってわかりやすくまとめている。勿論Hetch Hetchy問題に絡むMuirとPinchotの確執、National Park Service(NPS)とFSのライバル関係などにも触れられている。自画自賛に陥ることなく、批判も含めて冷静に歴史を書いた作品となっている。リージョンコードなし、英文サブタイトル付き。

2000年(4月)に出版されたHiking Yosemite National Parkですが、
今年6月出版の2ndエディションで内容がかなりグレードアップしました。
ヨセミテハイキング入門には初版でも十分な参考書になりましたが、
今回の版ではトレイルマップ、TOPOデータ、写真が一層充実しました。
定価は$15.00くらいしますが、なぜかamazon.comで$10.47とお手頃価格で売られています。
オススメの一冊です。

1869年に、California Geological Suｒvey(カリフォルニア地質調査隊、Whitney隊)のJosiah Dwight Whitneyにより書かれた「The Yosemite Book」は、当時最も権威のあるヨセミテに関する案内書でした(これは豪華版で、後に写真なしの普及版「The Yosemite Guide Book」が幾度か改定、再販されます)。副題”A Description of the Yosemite Valley and the Adjacent Region of the Sierra Nevada, and of the Big Trees of California”に示されるように、ヨセミテ渓谷とその周辺、そしてマリポサのセコイアについて紹介されています。序章では、ヨセミテ渓谷が州立公園となり、調査隊が測量をするに到った経緯、マリポサ大隊のヨセミテの発見以降の話、インディアンによる地名の呼び方等についてまとめられています。2章でアメリカ全土から始まりカリフォルニア・シエラネバダに到る地勢・植生が述べられたあと、ヨセミテ渓谷（3章）、ハイシエラ（4章）、そしてBig Tree(5章)についてかなり詳しく書かれています。学者の書いた本で、かなり堅苦しいところもありますが、まだ地図の空白部が残る頃のヨセミテを知る貴重な一冊です。250冊しか刷られなかったこの本は、出版時の価格が10ドルという高価本で、現在では1万ドルを軽く越えるオークション価格が付いています。OctavoのCD本(写真)はJim Snyder(ヨセミテ国立公園の史家)のかなり興味深い前書きや、Carleton WatkinsとW. Harrisの写真や地図を含む原本の全ページの超高解像度写真が付いており、古地図・モノクロ写真に興味のある方にとってはお勧めしたいアイテムです。
Whitney隊の関連本として、メンバーのWilliam H. BrewerとClarence Kingが書いた二冊が挙げられます。「Up and Down California in 1860-1864」を書いたBrewerはWhitney隊の初期メンバーで、彼の本は1860年から1864年にわたる調査行の日記集です。ヨセミテに関しては、1863年の6−7月に、HoffmannとともにBig Oak Flatからヨセミテ渓谷に測量に入り、その後Mt. Hoffmann、Mt. Danaなどの登頂やSoda Springsを拠点として行ったTuolumne Medows一帯での調査、そしてBloody Canyonを下りMono Lakeへとぬけた時のことが書かれています。
一方Kingは、その著書「Mountaineering in the Sierra Nevada」の”Around Yosemite Walls”及び”A Sierra Storm”の章で1864年秋のヨセミテにおける体験を書き綴っています。エール大を卒業してから１年ほど経ったClarence KingとJames Gardnerは、1863年8月末にSacramentoでBrewerに合流します。そして翌年彼らは南シエラでの測量(Mt. Brewer、Mt. Tyndallの登山を含む)を終えた後、Gardner、Cotterらを伴いヨセミテ渓谷を訪れます。目的はヨセミテ渓谷がカリフォル二アに譲与された事を受け、その境界の測量を行うためでした。この二章は、Mt. HoffmannやYosemite Creek、ノースリム一帯での登山、ヨセミテの最初の冬の嵐からの脱出について書かれています。この本は、現在ではMuirのRitter登山記とともにシエラ登山記の古典となっています。
