David Uberuaga氏が公園管理所長の後任に

公園管理事務所長Mike Tollefson氏の引退のあと、現マウント・レニエ国立公園管理事務所長のDavid Uberuaga氏が後任に決まったようです。なおTollefson氏は引退後、The Yosemite Fundの会長に就任する予定です。

ACTING SUPERINTENDENT SELECTED FOR YOSEMITE AND MOUNT RAINIER NATIONAL PARKS

David “Dave” Uberuaga (You burr ah gah) will serve as acting superintendent of Yosemite National Park, Calif, beginning
January 4, 2009. He arrives at the park as Superintendent Mike Tollefson retires from federal service.

Daily Report - Yosemite National Park
Uberuaga, a 24-year veteran of the National Park Service (NPS) is the current superintendent of Mount Rainier National Park, Wash. He will move to Yosemite Valley and assume Tollefson’s place until the selection of the next superintendent for the park is selected by Regional Director Jonathan B. Jarvis and the Director of the NPS.
While Uberuaga is stationed in California, his deputy, Randy King, will serve as superintendent of Mount Rainier National Park.
“I have enormous confidence in Dave,” Jarvis said in making the appointment. “Dave and Mike have served together on leadership councils within the NPS and their relationship ensures a smooth transition.”
Among the challenges Uberuaga has worked on this year at Mount Rainier is the rehabilitation of the historic Paradise Inn and completion of a new park visitor center also at Paradise. He will be following Tollefson who has shepherded the rehabilitation of Yosemite Falls and Tunnel View.
“It will be difficult to fill Mike’s shoes,” Uberuaga said. “He retires having achieved tremendous success and a solid relation with the community, and it will be a pleasure to work collaboratively with him as he assumes the position of President of the Yosemite Fund.”
The selection of a permanent superintendent at Yosemite will take several months. The superintendent is a Senior Executive Service (SES) position, the highest career level in the federal government. The rigorous application process is open to SES qualified individuals within the NPS.
“Dave’s a solid manager,” Tollefson said. “I can’t think of a better way to start my new position with the Yosemite Fund then by working with him.” (-NPS-)

The Glacier Point Road in Yosemite National Park will open for all vehicles on Friday, November 21, 2008, at 8:00 a.m. The road has been closed due to ice and snow on the road. However, with the recent warm weather, the road will reopen to all traffic. There will be no commercial facilities available at Glacier point, although restrooms will be available.

米国へ渡航される方へ：ESTA（エスタ）に申請してください

平成20年11月改訂
　2009年1月12日から米国の入国制度が大きく変更されますのでご注意下さい。観光、短期商用等の90日以内の短期滞在目的で米国を訪問される場合は、査証（ビザ）を免除されており、米国の査証を取得する必要はありませんが、事前に電子渡航認証システム（Electronic System for Travel Authorization：ESTA）に従って申請を行い、認証を受けることが必要となりました。この認証を受けていないと航空機等への搭乗や米国入国を拒否されます。
　詳しくは、米国国土安全保障省のウェブサイト

在京米国大使館のウェブサイト
（http://japan.usembassy.gov/j/visa/tvisaj-esta2008.html ）
等をご参照ください。

　査証を取得していない場合とは、乗り継ぎで米国へ渡航するケース等も含まれます。また、ESTAは査証免除者を対象としていますから、既に留学や就労の米国査証をお持ちの方は、ESTAへの申請は必要ありません。

　ESTAへの申請は、専用のウェブサイトhttps://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/ から行います。日本語案内のサイトもありますが、入力自体は英語で行います。入力する内容は、これまで米国入国に際して提出していた出入国カード（I-94W）と同じで、名前、生年月日、性別などの申請者情報、パスポート情報、渡航情報の他、いくつかの質問に対し、はい、いいえで答える形式となっています。インターネット環境のない方や英語が分からない方等は、申請者本人以外が代行することも可能です。

　申請に対する回答は大概即座になされますが、仮に回答が保留された場合は、72時間以内に回答がなされますので、数時間後に再度ウェブサイトで確認して下さい。また、認証が拒否された場合は、最寄りの米国大使館・総領事館で査証申請を行う必要があります。

　一度認証を受けると2年間（ただし、2年以内にパスポートの期限が切れる場合は、パスポートの有効期限日まで。）有効となります。ESTAへの申請に当たって、料金は無料です。

　米国政府は、渡航する72時間前までの申請を勧めていますが、申請自体は、具体的渡航日程が決まっていなくともできますので、米国への渡航予定がある方は余裕をもって申請することをお勧めします。

　ESTAは、米国の国内法である2007年「9・11委員会勧告実施法」に基づき、米国が短期滞在査証免除措置をとっている国々（我が国を含む欧州諸国等27か国）全てを対象として2008年8月1日に導入された。当面は任意による申請を勧奨されており、2009年1月12日以降、同システムが本格的に導入される予定である。ESTA申請専用ウェブサイトの日本語版は、2008年10月15日に開設された。

　本制度は、査証免除対象者の出入国カード（I-94W）の情報を出発前にオンラインで米国が収集し、米国が各渡航者について査証免除対象者として渡航する条件を満たしているか、保安上のリスクをもたらさないか等をチェックすることが目的である。またESTAの本格的な導入に伴い、将来的には出入国カードは廃止する予定となっている。

３人が軽い怪我若しくは避難中に喘息の発作に見舞われたそうですが、人命の被害はないそうです。ただ大事をとってカリー・ヴィレッジ宿泊者は避難中とのこと。

今シーズンのハーフドーム登山は10/14まで

NPSによれば今シーズンのハーフドーム登山は10/14までの予定（天候等の予定で延長もありうる）ということです。

　１３日までの米国出張の話の先週の続き－。堂本暁子知事は１７日の定例会見で「皆さんにお会いするのは久しぶりですね」と、機嫌よさそうに帰朝報告を始めた。視察や会議出席など分刻みのスケジュールの中で、知事が心躍らされた１つはやはりカリフォルニア州のヨセミテ国立公園訪問だった。
　「徹底して公園を守り、公園レンジャー（警備担当者）が逮捕権も持っている。ごみ１つ落ちていないし、持ち込みも許されていない。本当にきれいでした」と興奮気味に切りだし、「食料をクマに奪われた人が逆にその不注意をとがめられ、罰金を徴収された」「山から下りてきたクマをコルク玉のような空気銃で撃ち、殺さずに山に追い返す」という現地で聞いた話を披露。野生動物や自然保護に対する米国の厳格な“思想”に深く感銘を受けた様子だった。
　ウミガメやイノシシなどが海、山に比較的頻繁に現れる千葉のさらなる自然保護に、また１つヒントがつかめたのかもしれない。

　堂本暁子知事は５日から１３日まで米国に出張。精神障害者のケアシステムに関して情報交換したり、１０州の財界人らとの「日米合同会議」に出席、キッコーマン研究施設の開所式出席、カリフォルニア州のヨセミテ国立公園視察など“超過密”スケジュールだった。
　知事は「国際面の教育環境整備が（海外から千葉に）投資促進を図る上で急務」との持論があり、日米合同会議では来春開校予定の「幕張インターナショナルスクール」、成田空港などを引き合いに千葉県を積極的にアピールし、米企業誘致のトップセールスを行った。ウィスコンシン州のドイル知事とは観光やバイオマス分野で引き続き連携を図ることで合意したという。
　日程最後のヨセミテ国立公園視察について「自然保護で米国は先進的で世界でも群を抜いている。自然保護の思想やシステムを学びたい」と語っていた知事。環境問題に積極的で動物好きな知事にとって、同公園視察が一番の思い出となったかもしれない。

Tuolumne Planning Workbook

公園内Tuolumne Meadowsエリアの今後の管理計画について、これまで検討されてきたプラン（複数案）が公表され、公園利用者ほか一般からの意見が求められています。

　【シリコンバレー２９日時事】米カリフォルニア州北部にあるヨセミテ国立公園近くでこのほど大規模な山火事が発生し、主要進入道路の一つ、州道１４０号線が２９日、通行止めになった。消防士３５００人が消火活動に当たっている。
　地元紙によると、公園の一部では火事の影響で視界が悪化。公園への送電が停止されたものの、公園内の宿泊施設は自家発電でしのいでおり、客足は遠のいていないという。（2008/07/30-07:41）

　アメリカ・カリフォルニア州のヨセミテ国立公園付近で、２５日から山火事が発生しています。

　山火事が発生したのは、カリフォルニア州・ヨセミテ国立公園付近の山林で、ＡＰ通信によりますと、これまでに６５平方キロメートルの山林が焼け、１７０世帯が避難しました。

　被害の拡大を防ぐため、地元当局はヨセミテ国立公園の電線を切断しました。

　現場では消防士９００人が消火活動にあたっていますが、煙が広い範囲で拡がっているため、ヘリコプターなどが飛べず、空からの消火活動が難航しているということです。

　さらに、現場付近は４０度近くの猛暑に加え、空気が乾燥した状態が続いており、被害の拡大が懸念されています。（28日00:33）

現在公園に西にあるミッドパインズ（Midpines）近くで火災が発生しています。ハイウェイ140号線を使って入園予定の方は、道路状況をちょくちょく確かめて見てください。現在（現地時間日曜午後5時）のところ通行通止めにはなっていませんが、火災状況によって変わってくると思いますので。

この火災によってヨセミテ公園への送電線による電力供給停止を余儀なくされたとのことですが、公園内の施設は非常用発電装置を完備しているので、供給停止処置による影響はなく公園内の状況は「通常通り」とのことです。

6月に発生したオリバー・コンプレッックスの火災は落雷が原因でしたが、モデスト・ビー紙の記事は人為的原因（標的射撃）の可能性を示唆しています。

　【シリコンバレー３日時事】日本人ロッククライマーの平山ユージさん（３９）と米国人ハンス・フローラインさん（４３）は２日、カリフォルニア州北部のヨセミテ国立公園にある巨大岩「エルキャピタン」絶壁のスピード登攀（とうはん）に挑み、２時間４３分２３秒と最速記録を２分１２秒縮め、新記録を樹立した。サンフランシスコ・クロニクル紙などが３日報じた。

クマの親子に会いました

takashiさんが、ハイキング中に出会ったクマの親子の写真を送ってくださいました。かわいいですね。

場所　　パノラマトレールをグレーシャーポイントからネバタ滝に向かい、イリルエット滝の手前10分ほど手前の下り斜面。

Tuolumne Meadowsのガソリンスタンドはすでに24時間営業（クレジットカード）していますが、9-17時で現金支払い営業も開始しています。
Tuolumne Grill（軽食スタンド）が8-17時で営業を開始しています。

Tioga Road to Open in Yosemite National Park

Visitors urged to take safety precautions for upcoming Memorial Day Weekend
Yosemite National Park Superintendent Mike Tollefson announced today that the Tioga Road will open for the season on Wednesday, May 21 at 8:00 a.m. for all vehicle traffic. The Tioga Road, bounded on both sides by State Highway 120, is the popular east-west crossing of the Sierra Nevada. There will be no commercial services available along the road.
Additionally, the Tuolumne Meadows Campground, other campgrounds along the corridor, and the Visitor Center will not be open. However, there will be restrooms available on the road. All visitor services, including the campgrounds, store, gas station, etc. will open over the next several weeks.

Tioga Road開通情報

NPSの情報によれば、管理車両の通行が始まっているようです。一般車両の開通も間もなくではないかと思われます。

グレイシャーポイントロード開通

グレイシャーポイントロードの除雪作業が終わり、5/2の正午から開通しています。
（例年、日本の大型連休のときには未開通ですから、今年行かれている方はラッキーですね。）
またマリポサグローブロードも4/26から開通しています。
まだ道路脇には残雪があり、溶けた水で路面がぬれている箇所もありますので、通行には十分注意してください。

Glacier Point Road to Open in Yosemite National Park
Road to Mariposa Grove Opened April 26, 2008; Tioga Road Plowing Progressing Well Yosemite National Park Superintendent Mike Tollefson announced today that the Glacier Point Road is expected to open to visitors Friday, May 2, 2008 at noon. Glacier Point is located about 30 miles from Yosemite Valley off the Wawona Road, the section of State Highway 41 inside the park. Restrooms along the road and the Glacier Point Snack Stand will be open to visitors on Friday as well. Additionally, the Mariposa Grove Road opened on April 26, 2008 for vehicles under 24 feet in length and under 7 tons. These temporary restrictions are due to continuing wet and icy conditions on the road.
No date has been determined for the opening of Bridalveil Campground.
Roadways may be wet due to ice and melting snow and wildlife is very active on the Glacier Point Road. Visitors are advised to drive with caution.
An opening date for the Tioga Road (Highway 120 outside the park) which crosses the Sierra Nevada through Yosemite National Park, has yet to be determined. (-NPS-)

140号線の崖崩れ部分で仮ルートが使われてきましたが、いよいよ新しい橋を架ける決定が下されたようです。

Ending Location:15 miles from Crane Flat Gate (Mc Swain Summit)
Distance plowed today: 3.7miles
Average Snow depth: 6 ft.

Update on Glacier Point Road 4/24/08
Glacier Point Road is open to Administrative Traffic only.
The road is very icy due to current spring temperatures and is not sanded.
Wawona Road crews will be performing shoulder and road repairs as needed from Chinquapin to Glacier Point.
The gate at Chinquapin will be closed for administrative traffic only. ( Contact 460 before Admin. traffic entersroadway).
Forestry crews are presently removing hazard trees on the Glacier Point road starting at Chinquapin to Glacier Point.
Please watch out for Road crews, Sign Shop and Forestry crews on roadway drive slow and drive defensively. (T.Brochini - 4/24/08)

ヴァレー・シャトルバス運行情報

ヴァレー・シャトルは4/7-17の間、道路工事のためルコンテ記念館・ハウスキーピングキャンプのバスストップが閉鎖になります。
またエルキャピタン行シャトルがビジターセンター前から30分おきに運行を開始しました。（9:00-18:00）

Valey Shuttle: Due to the closure of Southside Drive, Shuttle Stop #12 (Le Conte Memorial/Housekeeping Camp) will be closed and guests and patrons are directed to Stop 13A (Curry Village). Effective 4/7 - 4/17. (G. Rosenfeld - 4/8/08)

El Capitan Shuttle: The El Capitan Shuttle has begun limited service from the Visitor's Center and Camp 4 to the El Cap Picnic Area. Service operates daily every thirty minutes from 9:00 to 6:00. After the construction is completed along Northside Drive, the Shuttle will expand to include the remaining stops at the cross-over and the four mile trail head. (G.Rosenfeld - 4/8/08)

バジャーパススキー場は3月30日で営業終了です。
また４月13日まではスキー場パーキングまでアプローチできます。（クロスカントリースキー、スノーシューなどがまだ楽しめます）14日からはグレイシャーポイントロードの除雪作業のため、Chinquapinのゲート（Wawona roadとGP roadの分岐）がクローズとなります。

Special Note: Badger Pass ski area will close on March 30th, 2008. Weather permitting - the road will remain open from Chinquapin to the Badger Pass parking lot until April 13th. The gate at Chinquapin will be closed to all traffic for snowplow operations to begin April 14th on the Glacier Point road

YOSEMITE RENAISSANCE XXIII ART EXHIBIT open at the Yosemite Museum Gallery through May 4, 2008.
(Fridays through Mondays, 10 to Noon and 1 to 4 PM).
This year, from a near-record number of 465 entries, 38 paintings, photographs, sculptures and drawings by 34 artists from across the country were selected. On the evening of the opening reception, photographer Ted Orland and print-maker Tom Killion (both former Yosemite Renaissance award-winners) will select the artists who will receive the $4000 in cash awards.
This year's exhibit is unquestionably one of the best ever mounted by Yosemite Renaissance, including a broad range of works from the representational to the abstract to the conceptual. Local artists in the exhibit include: Linda R. Abbott, Susan Bolen, Elizabeth Carmel, Michael Frye, Marian Gault, Peggy Hansen, Mark Heliger, William Neill, Penny Otwell, Jon Shiu, and Carol Rae Shockley. (B. Beroza - 2/26/08)

YAからのメールニュースによると、NPSはヨセミテにおけるOral History Project「聞き書き」プロジェクト"I Remember Yosemite." を始める模様。

Yosemite Launches Oral History Project

Yosemite National Park has launched a multi-year oral history project to capture the stories of people who have helped shape, and whose lives have been shaped by, one of the nation's most iconic national parks. The goal of the project is to enhance and enrich the historical understanding of Yosemite National Park with information that could not otherwise be found in the documentary record and to create a high-quality audio-visual oral history collection for use by researchers and future interpretive functions such as museum exhibits, programs, and podcasts.

While initial interviews for the project will focus on former and current National Park Service (NPS) employees, the scope of the project will also include concession employees, spouses and children of employees, long-time park residents, and members of neighboring communities - in other words, those individuals who have had a significant, and often long-term, connection to the park. The project will explore such themes as work, technological change, evolution of park management, environmental change, and the development of community life in the park.

Participants are being sought for the recorded sessions to document Yosemite area history currently titled "I Remember Yosemite."
